I will be one of the Guests of Honor at MechaCon in Lafayette, Louisiana, July 24th-26 of this year: http://www.mechacon.com/2009guest_adamjury.html

Despite my AWESOME press photo, I will not be eating cherry trees live at the convention, but I will be talking Shadowrun's 20th Anniversary, cyberpunk gaming, and other stuff!

I just lopped a bunch of people from my f-list. I spend much less time reading LiveJournal than I used to, and much less time writing to it at well. So I pruned: people who never update and never comment on my stuff ; people who update too frequently for my tastes about stuff I'm not particularly interested in ; people who don't update here but I keep in touch with on other networks.

Nothing personal. Just trying to better control the amount of input in my life.

I love Twitter, but I don't like twitter feeds being echoed to LiveJournal. I don't think it serves any use; by the time the echoing happens, the tweets are stale. Tweets live for minutes, maybe hours, but not for a day.

I don't begrudge anyone who wants to post their tweets to LJ ... but if I want to read them, I'll read them on twitter where they're useful. Typically, I just toss people who echo tweets and don't actually post other content to LJ onto my "read when really bored" filter, but now I'm filtering them out via CSS, with an easy technique that [info]ladyjestyr [by way of [info]isiscolo] pointed out to me.

Sadly, some LoudTwitter to LJ feeds are actually broken, and this won't catch them, but it reduces the amount of scrolling I have to do, and means I don't have to totally filter those people out.

Ugh. Last post had the wrong dates in it. super-genius me.

I'm looking for wrestling newsletters that cover December 1992 to April 1993. Wrestling Observer or Pro Wrestling Torch would both be fine. If anyone on my flist has them kicking around, let me know and I'd be very happy to take them off your hands.

Here's another great quote, from an interview with xkcd's Randall Munroe:

Does that mean that the book won’t carry a traditional copyright and instead take its lead from the online comic strip itself, which Mr. Munroe licenses under Creative Commons, allowing noncommercial re-use as long as credit is given?

“To anyone who wants to photocopy, bind, and give a copy of the book to their loved one — more power to them,” he said. “He/She will likely be disappointed that you’re so cheap, though.”

Sometimes you make a MP3 mix for a lover, and it's sweet. Other times, you should buy them the deluxe boxed set.

There's been a lot said about piracy and RPGs over the last few weeks, so this interview with Lee Gold brought out a quote that I really enjoyed:

1. How did you first become involved in the roleplaying games hobby?

Our friends, Owen & Hilda Hannifen, came down from San Francisco to visit us, with a copy of the Original D&D rules. My husband and I were fascinated, and they lent us a photocopy of the rules, on seeing us write a check to TSR to order our own copy, so we wouldn't have to wait till the rules arrived (in a brown box) from TSR.

Lee Gold has now been publishing Alarums and Excursions, the longest running roleplaying fanzine, for 35 years. And it started with a pirated copy -- but only when the source of the pirated copy was satisfied that Lee would be buying her own, soon.

I always say that piracy isn't a technical "problem," it's a social "problem." If people treat piracy as an "everything for free, for ME!" exercise, it's a drain on content producers. If people treat it as sharing, and introduce their friends to cool things, those friends become customers and possibly evangelists, too.

After a crazy month of March and early April, I've finished Episode 2 of Dirty Words Design; a grab-bag episode that revisits Episode 1 and further explains Packaging vs. Copy Links, and a “feature” of Packaging that you may not be aware of. I also give a brief overview on exporting a document to PDF while turning all the text in it to outlines; based on David Blatner’s article. It’s a technique that hopefully you won’t have to use, but it’s good to know in case you need it in a pinch!

[I will try to have some actual thoughts about this, when I am finished being exhausted and stressed. I hope you all like it.]

So, if you buy a Kindle 2, can you take your original Kindle and de-activate it, then re-activate it tied to a different Amazon account?

Anyone want to sell their used original Kindle to me at a game designer discount level? :P

I knocked out the second episode of Dirty Words Design over the weekend, covering a file cleanup technique that you can use to get a handle on unruly projects. This was a fun episode to record, and I'm already looking forward to sitting down and recording the next one!

You can also Subscribe to the Dirty Words Design weblog and also subscribe to the videocast with iTunes.

[I will stop cross-posting about this on LJ after I've established a pattern of episode releases, I suspect.]

I had meant to launch a new blog and videocast late last year, but it got delayed for a variety of reasons, and then last week I ended up "accidentally" launching a new blog, and then today, I pre-launched the videocast blog.

The videocast blog is Dirty Words Designs, which will be about Adobe InDesign and graphic design in general. It will be a combo of videocasts and written posts with trips/tips/links/etc.

The second is Best of Three Falls, which will be about the worked gladiatorial art of pro wrestling, and the not-worked gladiatorial sport of mixed martial arts. I moved all the wrestling-related posts from this blog over to there.

I was interviewed on the modern horror/dark future gaming podcast This Modern Death recently, and the episode was just posted.

It's about an hour, and we talk about all sorts of things: Shadowrun, Eclipse Phase, Paparazzi!, finger-painting, how I got into gaming, how I got into working in the game industry, the licensed property I'd like to work on the most, problems in the game industry, Tim Hortons, The Dresden Files RPG, poutine, the future of roleplaying, I poke fun at silly questions that gamers ask, and then turn right around and point out that there are a number of gamers who aren't online and aren't clued in to the latest trends and hot new games, and that they're going to keep on trucking no matter what we say or do.

Thanks to Shaun, Kristin, and Randy at This Modern Death for having me!

Keyboard won't respond when booting; won't boot into target disk mode; primary and secondary display won't work, can't boot using a Leopard install DVD.

Full audio explanation -- apologies that it's real rough, but, well, not in the mood to edit audio -- right here.

I'm out of AppleCare, so unless someone has a great idea, I'm taking this in for repairs tomorrow.

I was asked this during my interview with This Modern Death a few days ago [interview will be published sometime in the next couple weeks, I assume] and I'm curious about other people's answers.

The question is easy: What property [media, movie, comic-book, novel, whatever] would you most like see turned into a tabletop roleplaying game?

I have a couple ground rules:

* It has to be something that hasn't been released before or is upcoming. I'm not interested in "A new version of Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/James Bond" or anything like that, and yes, we all want Dresden Files RPG and Song of Ice and Fire to come out. :-)

* Who publishes it is irrelevant for this question; no publisher-bashing or publishing-praising is necessary.

* I want to hear how it would be great; what would make it stand out from the dozens of other licensed games that are released every year, and I want to hear why the property is cool. Telling someone that you love something isn't very useful; telling them why is.

Just a note that if you're wondering, for some crazy reason, "Hey, am I going to get an xmas card from Adam in the mail this year?" -- the answer is no, just like every other year! I'm consistent.

I've been pondering getting some non-business business cards done. Several times when traveling recently, I've bumped into people who admired my laptop bag, the Andrew Bawidamann sticker on my laptop, etc. It seems sensible to be able to handle them a fun card and say "drop me an email and I'll zap you the link to the place where you can get it." or something like that. Business cards are ridiculously cheap, so it might be an interesting way to share some of the things I like and meet/stay in contact with some interesting people, without being like "here's my corporate biz card email me."

Weird? Creepy? Fun?
